Elbow Room Taiko performs contemporary Taiko drumming. The Taiko Drum came to Japan as early as the 6th Century by way of India, China and Korea, and was used in folk festivals, and shinto and buddhist practices. Contemporary Taiko, as practiced by Elbow Room Taiko, offers original music with common human themes, in an uncommon way. The expressive possibilities for our profound and earthy drums are endless.

Elbow Room Taiko are your local neighbors from all walks of life. The mighty Taiko (drums) are the medium through which we express our solidarity with all living things including nature, animals, human beings and the spirit that animates all. Much of our music is composed by the legendary Taiko master, Ikuyo Conant (b. 1955, Japan).
Elbow Room Taiko Director Suzee Grilley was a performing member of several Taiko groups in the Monterey Bay Area of CA, all directed by Ikuyo Conant Sensei. Ms Grilley teaches in Ashland. Taiko training explores elements of dance, martial art and musical skill.
