Artist FAQ

Phase 1: Application

How do I apply?

Apply now at tinyurl.com/applyAF2027!

When does the application open and close?

The 2027 Artist Application opens on September 4th. The priority deadline is October 31st, 2026 and the final deadline is November 14th, 2026.

What kind of art can I submit?

Any and all! The Ashland Fringe Festival hosts theatre, music, film, visual arts, dance, drag, creative writing/poetry, workshops, lectures, and everything in between.

Visit the archives to see what was on display in the 2025 Ashland Fringe Festival!

Does my piece need to be complete when I submit my application?

Nope! You can submit a work in progress along with a detailed description of the final product.

When does my piece need to be finished?

All pieces must be in their finalized form by March 31st, 2027, 6 weeks before the Festival. Of course, you can continue to work on your pieces past that date but we cannot change venue or tech offerings past that date.

I have a lot of ideas and I don’t know which one is best for Fringe, can I submit multiple pieces?

Yes! Please submit both using the same artist information. We will most likely pick one piece, especially if they are in the same medium, based on how well they fit into our Festival programming.

How do I link a sample of my piece?

Please upload your sample (text, image, video, etc) to Google Drive, share the file with info@ashlandfringe.org, and link to that file. If you are having any difficulties with that process, you can email the sample directly to info@ashlandfringe.org.

How do I submit as a group?

Please choose one representative to be the submitting artist for the application. We will use your group name under all marketing but we require a point of contact.

What if my play isn’t cast/my band isn’t together/I haven’t booked any drag queens yet?

Not to worry! We will need your final roster by March 31st so you have plenty of time to get your team together. If you need outreach help, we can boost any auditions/open calls on Instagram.

Can artists under 18 or 21 participate?

Yes, with a few caveats. We ask that all artists 15 and under are accompanied by an adult and some of our indoor evening venues are 21+ so make sure to note the ages of you/your collaborators when filling out your application.

What tech is available at the Festival?

Ashland Fringe will provide artists with a venue and access to electricity. Other technical support and equipment will be communicated upon the assignment of venue. Plan to bring all your own technical equipment until your venue and its associated assets are confirmed.

How is visual art displayed at the Festival?

Visual art pieces will likely be displayed outdoors so be aware that your work may be exposed to wind and weather. We have limited gallery space so if you have a large body of work that needs to be hung on a wall we will work with you to curate a selection that fits out space.

What kind of content is acceptable at the Festival?

We strive to provide opportunities for artists to showcase any and all art but we take content into consideration when selecting venues. For example, a play that features sexual content would not be appropriate for a Lithia Park stage where children may be present.

Ashland Fringe requires accurate content warnings for every piece. Failure to provide content warnings will result in a rejected application.

Ashland Fringe has a zero tolerance policy for bigotry or hate speech.

If you are unsure if your piece requires content warnings, please reach out to info@ashlandfringe.org and we would be happy to work with you!

Can I use AI in my piece?

Ashland Fringe is primarily interested in the human creative process. If you would like to submit a piece that incorporates AI, tell us why and how you use it so that we can learn about your process.

How will I know if I’m accepted?

You will receive an email from info@ashlandfringe.org (so make sure to check the email you gave us!) by December 14, 2026 with our decision. If accepted, we will invite you to a short interview with the Festival Manager, a Venue Producer, and the Artistic Advisor for your medium.

Phase 2: Acceptance

What can I expect from the artist interview process?

The artist interview is an opportunity for the festival production team and artists to get to know each other and the artist’s piece in more depth. We will ensure that we can help you achieve your vision for your piece and provide any accommodations you require.

You will meet (usually virtually) with the Festival Manager, a Technical Producer, and the Artistic Advisor for your medium to further discuss your piece.

In some cases, pieces will be denied after the interview process if the team finds that it is not a good fit for Fringe. This is rare, and usually because of technical requirements we can’t meet, so make sure to read through our tech offerings thoroughly!

Once your interview concludes, the team will discuss if any changes need to be made to the schedule or venue to ensure you and your piece have the best platform to present on.

Finally, you will sign a contract to be locked in as an artist for the 2027 Festival!

How are pieces selected?

Applications to present at the Ashland Fringe Festival are reviewed and selected by a committee of Ashland Fringe Staff and Artistic Advisors to ensure that a diversity of work across disciplines aligns with the mission of the festival. Technical and logistical demands of a work are thoroughly considered with the 2027 venues and their associated technical set up in mind. We strive to give every artist what we think is the best space for their work. Sadly, we don’t have the capacity to accept every application we receive.

How are venues selected?

We assign venues based on technical need, expected audience size, and content. For example, Taiko drumming works best in the Bandshell while an intimate poetry reading fits the Japanese Garden and a DJ set makes sense at the Warehouse.

Do I have to pay to participate?

We charge a $10 acceptance fee to cover costs related to artists, venue rentals, facilities costs, and more. The fee is meant as a commitment, not a barrier to entry. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if cost is an issue.

What can I expect from the Fringe Team?

Ashland Fringe offers artists marketing, a performance space, and logistical assistance from our production team. We also provide performance staffing when available. We encourage artists to also market their pieces independently!

How do I submit marketing materials to the Fringe Team?

We require that all artists submit photos and descriptions of themselves and their pieces. We will send out a Google Form after your Artist Interview to collect all marketing materials.

Will I get to meet other artists before the Festival?

Yes, we will hold an artist meet and greet in the weeks leading up to the Festival. We can’t wait to see everyone in person!

Phase 3: Festival!

Will I have access to my venue before the day of my performance/installation?

No, we book our venues for the Festival weekend only. Our venue partners are generously donating their space and we don’t want to interrupt their regular business hours outside of the Festival.

How do I contact my venue?

Artists may not contact venues on their own or organize their own space for the Festival. Please direct all questions to your Ashland Fringe Venue Manager who will communicate with the venue owners.

What can I expect from load in/load out?

Each performance will have a maximum of 1 hour each for load in and load out. Your load in/load out times will most likely overlap with the pieces before and after yours.

Can I make money at the Festival?

All Ashland Fringe Festival events are completely free but artists can sell merch and/or solicit donations. At this time artists are unable to sell any merchandise in Lithia Park, but can solicit donations. This is subject to change.
