Girl Jazz

Sunday, May 4 • 10:00am – 11:00am

SOU Music Recital Hall • 450 S Mountain Ave, Ashland

Our mission is to honor and celebrate women in jazz. Jazz Standards learned and played are often primarily written by men. The Real Book, the most standard book used by jazz musicians, has 400 tunes and only one written by a woman. To highlight the importance of women in the jazz world, our set will feature all tunes written by women.

Girl Jazz Society is a club at Boise State University dedicated to creating a space for women in jazz. The club began in fall of 2023 when students at BSU noticed a lack of representation for women in jazz. Since the clubs creation they have played at Treefort Music Festival, Babe Vote voter registration events, and co-hosted University of South Carolina’s Jazz Girls Day. This combo features Christine Nygard, vocalist; Minnie Aagard, saxophone; Natalie Li, saxophone; Jordan Wheeler, trumpet; Kenna Patterson, piano; Sabrina Marie Thomas, Bass; Mary Elliot, drums.
