Having worked in a kitchen for a large portion of his life, Isaac has developed a love – hate relationship with the downright masochistic balancing act of preparing meals that border on presentable, enduring the drill sergeant-like orders from chefs already three drinks deep into service, and dealing with an ungrateful and vindictive customer base – all while trying to keep your cool and hold yourself back from cranking the propane from the stovetops and ovens and blowing the damn place to kingdom come. He aims to capture this feeling within the piece, as well as highlighting the difficulties that come with dealing with traumatic events when around people that instinctively attack when they smell blood. Horrible things happen to everyone, and often times, they happen to people that have no way of properly handling it.
This work is heavily inspired by the works of both Bourdain and Camus.

“86 – A Kitchen Play” is written by Isaac Glace, a senior at SOU, studying in the performance concentration while also studying Shakespeare. While acting is his primary focus, he also enjoys writing pieces that have a focus on the inability for people to communicate properly with one another, and the unique misery that comes with existing as a human being among other humans. He prefers setting his pieces in places where people bear who they are and how they operate to other people – may it be a within the sterile walls of a family therapy office, or in this case, the grease coated and unbearably hot kitchen of a restaurant. Isaac values capturing authenticity in his work, aiming to portray the oftentimes unfortunate consequences that showing unfiltered honesty to the people around you can have. He is also completely psychotic and should not be trusted under any circumstances – engage with caution.
